Types of leave
This guide explains the different leave types supported in Consult, how they are treated throughout the application, and the configuration options available for each.
Supported leave types
Consult supports the following leave types:
- Annual leave: Time off granted to employees for rest, vacation, or personal use.
- Sick leave: Leave taken when an employee is unable to work due to illness or medical reasons.
- Family responsibility leave: Time off to attend to urgent family matters such as illness, emergencies, or bereavement.
- Study leave: Leave granted for attending classes, exams, or other education-related commitments approved by the company.
- Unpaid leave: Approved absence from work where no salary or wages are paid.
- Maternity leave: Extended leave granted to a mother for childbirth and postnatal care.
- Paternity leave: Leave granted to a father or partner around the time of a child’s birth or adoption.
- Special leave: Flexible or exceptional leave category, typically used for unique or ad hoc situations.
- Unavailable (contractors only): Periods where contractors indicate they are not available for work assignments.
- Half day leave (deprecated): Previously allowed for taking half a day off, but no longer used.
How the different leave types are treated
1. Leave request and approval process
All leave types are applied for using the standard leave application flow. In short, users submit requests, which are then approved or declined by their resource managers. The approval process and corresponding notifications apply equally to all leave types.
2. Leave balances and deduction
- Annual: Successful leave applications will deduct days from a user's annual leave balance. The balance is tracked and displayed during leave request creation.
- Sick, family responsibility, study, maternity, paternity, unpaid, special leave: Does not deduct from the standard leave balance.
- Unavailable: Used for contractors to indicate periods where they are unavailable. Does not deduct from any leave balances since contractor leave days amounts are not tracked in Consult.
- Half day leave: Deprecated, not available anymore.
3. Display and indicators
Leave types are visually distinguished in calendars and lists:
- Annual: Green
- Sick: Yellow
- Unpaid: Red
- Family responsibility: Blue
- Study: Purple
- Maternity/paternity: Gray
- Special/unavailable: Pink
